Spa Experience for the Foodie in You

You know what they say: you are what you eat. Well, now you can literally soak bathe and moisturize with these edible spa treatments and beauty products. Not appetizing to you? No worries, we tried a bunch of them so you wouldn't have to.

Dermal Absorption and Beyond

Heard of dermal absorption? If it sounds scary, it kind of is. It's defined by the CDC as, "the transport of a chemical from the outer surface of the skin both into the skin and into the body." We wish we could give you an easy solution for products to avoid entirely, but it's complicated. According to Huffpost, "While there may be some chemicals that are too large to enter our bloodstream, many are small enough to penetrate." Luckily, there are plenty of products with all natural, edible ingredients. Try Lolli's Plum Elixir, Olive + M's Cleansing Oil, or Captain Blankenship's Avocado Cuticle Balm.

Edible Treatments

From beer baths, to cocoa facials, spas around the world are adding edibles to their menu. Dig into these indulgences!

  • Enjoy a Hot Toddy for the Body at The Greenbrier Spa
  • Indulge in the Cocoa Facial Experience at the Hershey Hotel
  • Exfoliate with a microbrew massage at the Ritz Carlton in Denver
  • Nourish your skin with the Avocado Wrap at the Fairmont Kea Lani

Spas everywhere are whipping up creative food-focused offerings and we're into it, but our bank accounts are weeping at the mere mention of said treatments. Have no fear, our DIY solutions are here!

Self Made #SelfCare

If you're ballin' on a budget we've got the DIY solutions for you to get your #selfcare on. We're not the only ones loving these options, according to Google's 2017 trend report "DIY beauty grew by 38%." Here are out favorites:

  1. Coffee Shower Scrub: Coffee grounds + almond or coconut oil + sugar = a recipe for silky smooth skin.
  2. Cinnamon Sugar Lip Exfoliator: Combine equal parts sugar and almond oil with a pinch of cinnamon for this delicious lip scrub. Eat a little while you're exfoliating? We won't judge!
  3. Easy AVC Toner: Mix equal parts AVC and water. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil for a refreshing toner and a dewy look.

What This Means for Brands

The skepticism and demand for transparency that's now commonplace for food products is increasingly prominent within the beauty industry. The natural beauty movement is even leaking into legislation with the Personal Care Products Safety Act. If passed, the act would "reform regulation of personal care products requiring companies to ensure that their products are safe before marketing them and giving the FDA the tools it needs to protect the public." Brands will be forced to become more transparent with their ingredients and processes or face the threat of being replaced by more forthcoming options.
